Karl was serving with the Staffordshire regiment when he was wounded in Basra, Iraq, 2005. He was aged 18.

He was inside a Warrior tank which was attacked by rioters during a raid on a jail in Basra, Iraq to free two undercover soldiers.

An image of him rolling down the front of the tank covered in flames as he escaped from the tank made shocking headlines around the world.

He sustained 37% third degree burns to his face, hands, arms and legs. Karl had to undergo 5 years of treatment, having 16 operations and over 100 hours on the operating table.

Although the injury was difficult it inspired and motivated him into living life and pushing himself in multiple extreme events, while also helping others around him reach their own new personal heights. In 2012 Karl became the first person in history to complete 100 official marathons,  in-between summating some of the world’s highest mountains, including Mont Blanc (4810 m), Manaslu (8156 m) and attempting Mt.
